Reflective Narrative
In WLC 300, professors from the World Languages and Cultures prepared us for life after graduation. In this course, we had a lot of guest speakers that shared valuable experiences and knowledge about their career as Language professionals, some of them were recently graduated students who talked about the possible jobs we can find where our BA in Spanish/Japanese is well received, such as translation and interpretation, education, research, tourism, among others. I was also introduced to graduate studies and all the possible opportunities there are for us if we decide to pursue a Masters. I received guidance in preparing all the documentation that needed to be ready for graduation; for example, my résumé, my individual learning plan, my personal statement, and my portfolio. The week I had to create my personal statement, we received the visit of Steven Goings, a counselor from the Personal Growth and Counseling Center at CSUMB. This session was the one that impacted me the most during this course because I had the opportunity to talk about my visible and invisible identities and I reflected on the challenges we have when we belong to communities that are vulnerable due to the oppression they have historically suffered. I also had the opportunity to think about other people and communities that don’t share the same ideas I do, the importance of being understanding and open-minded towards them, and question the prejudices that I may have formed consciously and unconsciously about other people. Overall, this course helped me put my future in a good direction, offering me the necessary tools to get to where I want to be after graduation.
